Safety, Products and Liability: A Legal Blog

Welcome to my blog. This blog is dedicated to helping anyone who is currently in the midst of a liability issue. A few years ago, my daughter contracted listeria due to poorly packaged food. She, thankfully, was okay, but we still took her case to court. I want all families who have been affected by liability issues to understand their rights, so I decided to start this blog. My beautiful daughter is now 17 and preparing to start uni next year. I have three younger children as well and an amazing husband. Thank you for reading my blog. Please share my posts if they help you!

Three Questions to Ask Yourself Before Hiring a Personal Injury Lawyer

by Liesanne Martin

Getting injured by someone else's negligence, whether it's at work or in public, can be incredibly distressing, and hiring a personal injury lawyer can be a good way to achieve justice. This guide explains three questions you should ask yourself before hiring a lawyer, to ensure you're making the right choice.

What Do You Hope to Achieve from This Case?

You should think carefully about your motives before beginning a personal injury case. It's likely that it will take months to be concluded, and will involve repeating and thinking about the details of your injury. Therefore, you should make sure that a successful case would truly achieve your goals. Perhaps you want money to cover specific costs associated with your injury, want to change your workplace so nobody else is injured or simply want to feel like you've achieved justice. Would a successful case help with these goals? If so, then hiring a personal injury lawyer is a great next step.

What Evidence Can You Produce?

One of the first things you will discuss with your lawyer will be your evidence, so it's worth thinking about it beforehand. The things you can use as evidence can be complicated, and your lawyer will be able to explain the details to you. Begin by making a list of everything you can think of — witnesses to your accident, safety reports, photographs, medical reports and anything else that might be potentially relevant. You might not end up using it all, but you will have a good idea of whether you have enough for a realistic, successful case.

How Will You Pay for the Lawyer's Services?

Hiring a lawyer can be expensive, as you already know. Therefore, you should spend a little time thinking about finances. Speak to a few personal injury lawyers and see if you can get an estimate on how much they would charge. Will any of them let you pay later or set up a payment plan? How much money do you think you would gain from a successful claim? Do the finances of your claim make sense? If you're not sure, seek advice on this topic — just because a claim will be expensive doesn't necessarily mean it isn't worth making, as it might be a good idea in the long run.

If you spend some time thinking about your motives, your evidence and your finances, you can make the best possible decision for you and ensure that your choice to hire a personal injury lawyer is a correct and empowering one.
