Safety, Products and Liability: A Legal Blog

Welcome to my blog. This blog is dedicated to helping anyone who is currently in the midst of a liability issue. A few years ago, my daughter contracted listeria due to poorly packaged food. She, thankfully, was okay, but we still took her case to court. I want all families who have been affected by liability issues to understand their rights, so I decided to start this blog. My beautiful daughter is now 17 and preparing to start uni next year. I have three younger children as well and an amazing husband. Thank you for reading my blog. Please share my posts if they help you!

Top Tips When Hiring a Divorce Lawyer.

by Liesanne Martin

Are you planning to divorce your spouse? An experienced family lawyer can significantly ease the divorce process. Read the extract below to know the various considerations to make when hiring a divorce attorney.

Experience and Qualifications

Look for a lawyer who has years of experience in divorce cases. Professional accreditations and post-graduate diplomas are an indication that you will receive high-quality services. The lawyer should be licenced to practice in your state. Conduct some online research to determine the lawyer's reputation. In addition, you could ask for referrals or seek testimonials. Examine the lawyer's success rate. For instance, has he or she handled similar cases in the past? If yes, what was the outcome?

Professionalism

The lawyer should exhibit a high degree of professionalism. He or she should advise you if you meet the minimum divorce requirements. For example, you must be separated for at least one year. Below are a few other ways to examine the lawyer's professionalism;

  • The lawyer should manage your expectations from the onset. For example, if he or she thinks that you cannot get sole custody of your child, he or she must let you know.
  • The solicitor should advise you on divorce conduct. For example, the court might fine you if you chose to transfer property without the consent of your ex.
  • Does the lawyer pick your calls and respond your emails on time? Avoid lawyers who take time to respond to your inquiries.
  • The lawyer should meet the set deadlines.
  • The lawyer must act in your best interests. For example, if you have an abusive spouse, he or she should help you apply for Apprehended Violence Orders (AVO).

Communication Skills

The lawyer should have excellent listening and speaking skills. Further, he or she must be a people person. Remember that the lawyer may have to negotiate a divorce agreement on your behalf. Besides, he or she might have to represent you in court.

Pricing

Inquire about the lawyer's pricing mechanism. For example, while some lawyers will provide a free consultation, others charge a small consultation fee. Some lawyers have a fixed charge while others charge per hour. Ask about deposits and cancellations. In addition, inquire about any extra expenses such as administration fees. When and how should you make payments? Most lawyers will send a weekly invoice to ensure you are up to date with your payments. Do not be hesitant to negotiate if you think that the lawyer is a bit expensive.

The primary considerations to make when hiring a divorce lawyer are the solicitor's qualifications, experience, professionalism, communication skills and pricing. For more information on the services that a family law lawyer can provide, consult a resource in your area.
